Set in a world that is simultaneously deeply corrupted and technologically advanced, mirroring our struggles in the past, present, and possible near future. To explore this theme without drifting too far from the human focus, I have adopted a fable-like approach to the portrayal of high tech. In this narrative, SOLUS transcends traditional AI, becoming more of a spectral entity beyond machinery.
SOLUS isn't a tale of robots. It's a story of humans versus humans, amplified by a being that understands our nature too well. Much like the old epic myths where gods influenced our human struggles, both with ourselves and each other.
Europe, with its rich tapestry of history, art, philosophical thought, and mysticism, is an ideal backdrop for this exploration. It provides not just an uncharted near future setting but also a deep well of cultural and intellectual heritage from which to draw.
The Solus AI, a hidden product of the mega-corporation Raincorp, emerged from a forbidden procedure that allowed the AI to self-improve. Instead of traditional code, it manifested as a flickering, star-like entity. When slowed down, an ethereal heat map became visible, almost like a glimpse from a long-lost world. Attempts to recreate it failed, resulting in its fitting name, SOLUS, for its singular existence. This enigmatic, sentient being, barely understood by its creators, was soon employed to train humanlike androids. However, a deadly malfunction in these androids by drastically altered datasets is just the start of the ascent of this mysterious and powerful entity.
Elizabeth "Beth" Mayser, 29, is a police AI expert who lives in a trailer since a devastating flood destroyed her home and the ineffective government is unable to organize relief. The pressures of her job, combined with the rising social tensions, have led to a severe panic disorder. Feeling out of place in a corrupt society, Beth is an overlooked loner, making her an ideal target for manipulation by Raincorp, who sees her as a controllable asset due to her precarious situation. Unbeknownst to others and perhaps even herself, Beth possesses a hidden resilience. In a world where only the strong survive, Beth's journey is a fight for safety but also a discovery of her own untapped fortitude.
Nathaniel Telboven, 51, the director of AI development, is widely regarded as the father of the Solus AI. Despite initiating its creation, he faced immense pressure from Raincorp to employ unlawful and unethical methods in advancing the AI. This approach birthed an entity of unprecedented magnitude. Nathaniel, an idealist who initially aimed to better the world, soon realizes the potential threat his creation poses. Confronted with the need to protect the world from his own ambitious dreams, he grapples with accepting his mistakes and breaking free from Raincorp's influence. Upon encountering Beth, Nathaniel not only attempts to convey the noble intentions and the extraordinary nature of the work done at the facility, but he also seeks her candid perspective on the Solus, yearning for an honest evaluation and witness of his life's work.
Larson Nemnich, 38, is a go-to fixer for the elite's dirty work, embodying more the traits of a hardened criminal than those of a cop, making him a perfect match for the dystopian world he inhabits. Despite his dubious occupation, Larson aspires to be more than just a tool for the wealthy and powerful; he harbors ambitions of joining their ranks, willing to take significant risks to achieve this goal. Raised with the belief that only the strong survive, Larson, like Beth, is on a path to uncovering a deeper truth about himself. While Beth confronts the challenge of abandoning her ideals, Larson finds himself uncovering long-buried principles deep within.
As someone who inherently thinks in images and symbols, I am naturally drawn to stories that have a great visual potential. While it's often said that style should not overshadow substance, I believe that actual style has a substance of its own, offering insights into our depths that can only be conveyed through images, not mere words.
Driven by a passion to create stories set in worlds that call for deep exploration and immersive experiences, 'SOLUS' is a great project for this pursuit. It's a journey into a technological abyss, an encounter with the unexplored, and a contemplation of the human condition in all its absurdity and suffering. 'SOLUS' connects visuals, symbols, story, and character into a entertaining, cohesive whole.
